Biology - (9) - Open only to Freshman - (1st or 2nd semester) Required.

Discovering the many fields of biology and giving the student an idea of how large and relevant biology is in today's world. Also to give a student an indication of what field he or she would like to continue to pursue in biology.

Physical Science - (9) - (1st or 2nd semester) Required

Physical science is a one semester course dealing with materials, energy and related topics in Ear~h Science. Class activities will familiarize the student with basic principles of chemistry, physics and earth science, and their applications in today's world. Teacher demonstrations and lab exercises will help the student develop inquiry skills and learn some of the techniques of laboratory research.

Animal Life (Invertebrate Zoology) - (10) - (1st semester)

The course will encompass creatures made up of one cell and move up to echinoderms. The student will find out what makes up the internal structure of animals. Lab work (which is primarily done with the microscope) will compose one fourth of the grade. Open to 10, 1 1, 12.

Plant Life (Botany) - (10) - (2nd semester)

The course involves the study of the structural and functional relationships of the major taxonomic groups of plants and tree identification. The lab will explore the external and internal structure of plants. Lab work (which is primarily done with the microscope) will compose one- fourth of the grade. Open to 10, 11, 12.

Chemistry- (10)

The class and laboratory are designed to acquaint the student with the basic concepts involved in the study of the structure, composition, and make up of matter. (Pre-requisite - Freshmen Science and Algebra 1) Open to 10, 1 1, 12.

Ecology- (10) (Offered both semesters)

Ecology is the study of the inter-relationships between plants, animals and the environment. Lab exercises are designed to acquaint the student with biological techniques used in study of aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Students will give a 10 minute presentation to the class and write a major paper (10 Pages) on ponds and/or stream ecology. (Pre-requisite - 1 semester of biological science) Open to 10, 1 1, 12.

Electronics - (10) (1st semester)

A basic course In the theory of A-C and D-C circuits and their applications. Lab work with practical circuits will be emphasized. (Pre-requisite - One year of H.S. Science) Open to 10, 11, 12. This course may not count as a science credit at some colleges.

Human Anatomy and Physiology 1- (10) - (2nd semester)

This is the study of the human body. We will go through the body by systems, study the functions of each system, and diseases related to each. Lab will consist of dissection of the rat. (Pre-requisite- Animal Life) Open to 10, 11, 12.

Physics - ( 1 1 )

Physics is the study of the relationships between matter and energy. Areas covered in class and lab include ,mechanics, heat, optics, sound, nuclear reactions, magnetism and electronics. (Pre-requisite - 2 years of science and taking Algebra ll) Open to 11, 12.

Advanced Biology (Vertebrate Biology) - (11) - (2nd Semester)

(Offered in altemating years with Anatomy 11)

Students will study the groups of vertebrates with extensive taxonomy and identification. Animal behavior is also emphasized. Prerequisite is two years of science and a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.

Anatomy ll - (11) - (2nd semester)

(Offered in alteMating years with Advanced Biology)

This course is designed to cover the systems not discussed in Anatomy and Physiology, and goes into greater depth of some systems discussed in both cla;,ses. Students will perform comparative dissections, design a unit of study, and if possible, observe animal surgeries and tour the University of lowa anatomy department. It is suggested that students take Anatomy & Physiology first, but with approval of the instructor, this prerequisite can be waived.

Science IV Independent Study- (12) - Both semesters

An original laboratory or field work project of special interest to the student is pursued under the supervision of the instructor. (Prerequisite - 3 years of science and approval of instructor)
