Mediapolis
Parent University
On
Monday, October 27 from 6:30 – 9:00 p.m., plan to attend the Parent University
(P.U.) being offered by Mediapolis Elementary School. This is a one-night event where various parenting issues will
be addressed in mini-sessions that parents can choose from.
Sessions will be taught by members of the school staff, as well as other
educational experts. Sessions will be approximately 30 minutes in length and
topics are still being added! Parents
are encouraged to call ahead and pre-register for the event, as some sessions
will be limited in size. Preference
on session selection will be given to those who register first.
Pre-registration is encouraged, but not required and began on Monday,
October 20.
FREE
CHILD CARE WILL BE PROVIDED,
as
will refreshments and door prizes.
A
family pool pass will be given away!!!
We
have several organizations that will have displays and tables set up.
We
have a lot of exciting things to offer. We
hope to see you there.

Child Sexual Abuse
Stefanie
Wood’s presentation details causes and effects of abuse, signs of abuse, what
to do and what not to do if a child discloses abuse. Preventing abuse at home and in the community will be
discussed as well.
Talking
to Your Child About Drugs & Alcohol
Parenting
for prevention – learn how to raise a child to say no to drugs & alcohol.
Sgt. Steven Parker will lead a discussion of common drugs of abuse and
how to detect signs of substance abuse. There
will be time for questions and sharing.

I Reading Meeting & Reading Strategies
What
do you do when “Sound it out” doesn’t work?
What happens when reading time becomes a battle?
This session will explore strategies that may be helpful as you and your
child read together. While we will incorporate the Title 1 Reading parent meeting
into this session, all parents of beginning or struggling readers are welcome.

Children Learn Math
Bonnie
Gabriel of Great Prairie AEA will share informal strategies for parents to use
in supporting their student’s mathematic achievement.
Technology
in the Classroom & at Home
Iowa
AEA Online is a set of 8 database resources subscribed to by Great Prairie AEA.
During this hands-on session, passwords will be shared and access to
these powerful databases will be discussed.
Included will be some helpful hints for Internet safety.
Bullying
Prevention
This
session will discuss the basics of bullying at school and in the neighborhood
– what it is and isn’t. Mike
Monfils of Great Prairie AEA will also talk about what parents and children can
do to prevent bullying or to deal with it when it occurs.
Saving
for Your Child’s College Education
Saving for your children's college –
statistics on rising costs and savings plans that are out there for
investing in your children's future will be shared.
Preparing
Your Child for Kindergarten
Social,
emotional, and academic considerations in preparing your child for kindergarten
will be discussed.
Issues beyond the classroom that every parent should know will be
addressed as well.
Considerable time for questions and answers will be allotted.
How
to Reduce Fighting Between Siblings
A
common parenting issue is the fighting and bickering that takes place between
siblings. Although sibling fights usually cannot be eliminated completely,
there are some simple, effective ways to reduce the amount and intensity.
This session will give parents some tools to keep families more peaceful.

& Limits
Parents
have choices about ways to guide and discipline their children. The “Love and
Limits” style is more effective in raising responsible respectful children
than the “parent’s way” or the “child’s way.”
Pediatric
Health Issues
Carol
Cary will discuss a variety of pediatric health topics – medication safety,
proper hand washing, child nutrition, and exercise.
Time for questions and answers will be allotted.

Information
