Facts about Acid Rain
- Acid Rain is precipitaion of a pH value less than 5.6
- Major sources of acid rain are sulfur dioxide(SO2), and nitrogen oxides(NOx)
- Sulfur dioxides and nitrogen oxides combine with hydrogen to produce acids
- The acids come to Earth as rain
Effects of acid rain
- Surface Waters and animals- causes freshwater bodies to become more acidic than normal which kills off some sensitive species.
- Forests- stunts growth of forests which slows down production of oxygen.
- Automotive Paint- causes paint to corrode faster and causes more rust.
- Visibility- causes haze in atmosphere.
- Human Health- kills off some of food chain, limits the amount of oxygen, and damages lungs by creating acid particles in the air.
Proposal
We propose that each major polluter or manufacturer of polluters should be encouraged to limit amounts of SO2 and NOx released into the atmosphere and if possible, we think the government should instead of spending money on inspections and inspectors, provide money incentives to decrease amounts of pollutants.
